It’s the season for all things spicy and warm. Apple cider is one of those things that elicits warm and fuzzy fall vibes. Store bought apple cider isn’t healthy with all the additives! So I decided to compile a delicious homemade alternative! This recipe is quick and simple. It’s a great way to use up all those apples from the orchard!
Only use organic ingredients if available in your area. Regular store bought apples can be sprayed with glyphosate.
Kitchen items needed for this recipe:
-crockpot
-colander
-potato masher
-fine mesh sieve
Ingredients:
-10 organic apples cored and quartered( I use a variety of colors and flavors here)
-one organic orange sliced
-filtered water about 6-9 cups
-4 whole cinnamon sticks
-1 tsp whole cloves
-2 tsp nutmeg
-2 cups brown sugar to taste
-Directions
Wash apples then core and quarter! I keep the peelings on.
Cut your orange in slices.
Add fruit, water and all spices with the exception of the brown sugar into the crockpot and heat to low for 6 hours. Enjoy the wonderful fall scent this gives off!
When the fruit appears soft mash with the potato masher.
Add your brown sugar, adjust for flavor. Allow to simmer another hour.
Strain fruit off into another container.
Then strain again with the fine mesh strainer into the container of your choice. I use a large canning jar. Refrigerate for up to three weeks! Enjoy!
